Thank You For Being A Mentor
One of the coolest things about this experience has been interacting with news industry professionals who boast impressive résumés and even more impressive presentations. Just hearing them talk to us and educate our group on their wealth of knowledge, but having them evaluate our work has been the biggest treat of all.
I believe I can speak for Claudia, Lisa, and Sarah-Anne by saying Deb Van Tassel of The Arizona Republic has been an invaluable resource in shaping our stories. I know my story would have been a big fat mess without her help.
I'm not the only one who will benefit from her guidance; I'm planning on taking many of the things she told us over our two lunchtime edit sessions and pass them onto my kids, such as "be conversational with your story" and "don't rely on your headline to tell your story."
Thank you, Deb, for taking time out of your busy schedule to make time for us. It has impacted me and will impact my kids.

I'm consistently impressed with how dedicated the professionals are to the task and to you teachers. I'm glad you found the experience helpful.

ReplyDeleteI so agree. Our professional, Josh Coddington of the Arizona Capitol Times, was an incredible help to me. He provided comments on the stories, both positive and constructive, that will help all of us with the rewrite. Especially me!

P.S. Forgot to add the byline tag and tried to delete the first comment and redo. Interesting to see what happened.
Joe Garcia was such an inspiration for our group. As our mentor, he was kind, giving, tough, and fair. I hope that he continues to be a mentor for the Reynolds people. He did a fantastic job in motivating us, complimenting us, and sending us on to do great work.
