ASU's Sharon Bramlett-Solomon shares lessons on diversity. |
Arizona State University Cronkite School's Sharon Bramlett-Solomon said those words, and I've lived by that code of commitment in my newsroom since day one.
If you make it a point to practice diversity and inclusiveness from the start, it soon fades from being an intentional point and simply becomes a way of how things are done.
I think it's important to have all students research the many minority journalism organizations that exist in our country and gain an understanding of why they exist. In addition, these organizations offer many opportunities for scholarships and internships for students.
The major ones are:
National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) www.nabj.org
National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) www.nahj.org
Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) www.aaja.org
Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) www.naja.org
National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) www.nlgja.org
I'm a past president of the Dallas-Fort Worth Association of Black Journalists (DFWABJ). I currently serve as vice president. We are a local NABJ chapter. I'm also a past deputy director for Region V/VII of NABJ.
Our national convention is July 31 - August 4, 2013 in Orlando, Florida. I'm a core mentor for the NABJ JSHOP program that offers a FREE journalism bootcamp for high school students in every convention city we go to. Please spread the word to Florida based media teachers to have their students apply. More information can be found here:
The NABJ High School Workshop (JSHOP) is an annual high school journalism workshop held in the host city of the National Association of Black Journalists' Convention and Career Fair.
The 2013 JSHOP will take place from July 28 - August 1, 2013 in Orlando, FL. The program will consist of interactive learning opportunities through lectures, presentations, assignments, training and tests. The students will learn journalism fundamentals for newsgathering, writing, photography, video, radio, blogging and editing. Journalism educators, journalists and college journalism students would provide expertise, mentorship and supervision.
Application Deadline: June 27, 2013

Diversity does matter. As Bramlett-Solomon said, "Diversity begins with you."

Eva,
ReplyDeleteThank you for these fabulous resources.
At the University of Oregon's Fall Press Day, my editor-in-chief and I attended a session about diversity. The message was to look at every story we write from multiple perspectives.
We immediately implemented this idea with the whole staff and talked with everyone about looking for a variety of sources. The results were mixed with lots of students still going to their friends for quotes. But we did start the conversation and in several of the articles throughout the year, there were actually quotes from a wide variety of sources. Awareness is the start.
You're welcome Greg!
DeleteLet me know if I can ever help in any way. The majority of my students do not fall into the categories of the groups listed, however, I've taken them to conferences and encouraged them to apply for opportunities these organizations offer. They've enjoyed the experience and have benefited greatly.

These resources are amazing---Eva, I could myself lucky to have you as a classmate here. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI keep an open mind in all parts of my life--or near as I can. I stumble sometimes, and try to do better at the next opportunity. Part of that openness needs to come from taking stock of all of the types of diversity we encounter in our lives each day, both in and out of school. Socio-economic, gender, sexual, racial, political, physical ability, mental ability, academic, language, cultural, and so many more.... Working our kids through that is vitally important, and I'm thankful for the times when the tables are turned and they point out a teachable moment or "but what about" to me, especially on these topics.
Off to bookmark links.....
