THATS BOSS

So today we got to discuss the boss.  We got to put things on the board that represent things about the boss that we may not like.  This was the first time I heard EVERYONE in the class scream out suggestions.  It made Mike Simons proud.

The hands flew up in the air as our guest speaker, Kristin Gilger, continued to write.  Pretty amazing sight.

This was how the How to Deal with your Boss lesson began.  I knew it was going to be a good lesson.

When Gilger, associate dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, gave us her 4 Cs of a boss, I took notes.  Because she said that these things are what they students are looking for in us:

1) Competence 2) Communication 3) Compassion 4) Courage

"There is no hiding from your boss"

SO true.  I definitely understand that, and I know that I must establish a positive relationship with the boss (principal) especially if there were issues in the past (which there was!)

Then we wrote down things about our boss and I realized that even though he has been my Principal for 4 years I really really did not know much about who, as a person, he was.

But I would have to say one of my favorite parts of the session was the How to Deal With Your Boss.  Gilger gave us real scenarios on how we should deal with our bosses.  The steps where very specific  and were very enlightening.  I will definitely be using the things that I learned today to get a leg up in the politics of the administration of my school.  I will also be using the difficult conversations portion of the lesson not only with my administration but in other aspects in life.

  1. Kristin's great on this subject. She asked the other day whether I was sick of hearing her presentation each year. I told her I use her tips to my advantage when she tries managing me. It turns the issue on its head to think about what's important to the boss.
