I found Steve Doig's talk about data driven reporting really interesting. His story about uncovering the shoddy construction in Florida showed how he compiled all different types of data to find trends in the damage caused by hurricane Andrew. His analysis uncovered systematic weakening of construction laws in the years prior to the storm. The data drove him to the story.
The different tools he showed us will enhance my student's reporting skills. But, I think the resources he shared will be useful beyond my journalism classes. In AP Lang we do an extensive research project. Teaching my kids how to better use search resources will definitely enhance their research and will develop needed skills for college. One thing I have taken away from this program is that the skills we teach our journalism students really are skills they will use beyond that course Not only will I be using new things in my journalism class, but I will also be modifying some of the things to use in my English classes.

His presentation definitely made me think about how I could use it in English classes! I can use these resources for my junior research project. My kids always have time finding good sources to use-issue resolved!
ReplyDeleteThe things we learned today have tremendous value in our other classes. The Google Ngrams provides great data exploration in my math classes. I'm excited to use that resource and Google Trends. Yet another thing to throw into my principal letter on the value and excitement this institute instilled in me.
