The Arizona Republic tour was a great experience. I found myself taking notes on many different aspects of the newsroom and wish that I could share this experience with my students.
Highlights:
1) I got to personally meet Chad Graham, who I had a phone interview with about my story and the apps that he uses. I introduced myself and got a great video of him talking about apps that he discussed in my story. This will be helpful and I might be able to use the video for my story.
2) The daily planning conference or "mosh pit" was very was my favorite part. It was a great example of collaboration. I like the idea that they have 8 platforms and then several different content areas. This is great way to organize information and be able to handle story ideas. The 8 different platforms were pitches, requests and assignments, trending, plans and diversity. The content groups included features, sports, print, weather, life, business, watchdog, community, editorial,12 news, trending, breaking news, 12News, A1, and V&S. The journalists are expected to be experts on their beats.
3) I thought it was eye-opening when the journalists talked about how they already had a story written up for when Nelson Mandela dies. They talked about how he is critical condition and how it is important to have something ready for the event before others did. WOW!
4) I loved taking pictures of the newsroom and the different posters they had on the walls. It gave me some great ideas of how to decorate my classroom.
This was such a great experience! I am excited to go back and tell me students about this experience!

I missed the Tearable Puns. I'm so glad you were able to capture it for us. I might have to try some of this type of thing this coming year. I can post them outside my door. I could also have students in my English class create them. There's an assignment they can have fun with.
ReplyDeleteIt's the little things that brighten people's days. Thanks for brightening mine.
