Two days in, and I already feel like my brain is full of information! Today we learned some tips and techniques for teaching news writing and photojournalism. I already teach my students some of what we discussed today, which felt affirming.
One of the best things about this Institute so far is the practical ideas I am taking away. From our simulations (the impromptu lead writing exercise about Steve's tie wearing to our first writing assignment due at 6 pm sharp today!), I am already finding ways to incorporate these kinds of hands on activities in my classroom. Sometimes I worry when teaching my Intro. to Print and Broadcast Journalism class that I do too much talking, when I want my students to learn more by doing.
I enjoyed hearing Dave Siebert talk about his experiences as a photojournalist. I really want to invite a local photojournalist to my class next year. I do have a broadcast journalist visit my class, and students (and apparently teachers!) love hearing about "real world" experiences.
Speaking of "real world" experiences, I really enjoyed covering Randy Lovely's speech this afternoon. I have to admit, I was really nervous about it! While it was stressful, I thought it was a great learning experience. I haven't written on deadline like that in years. It was a rush! The part of the experience that felt most uncomfortable for me was trying to take a good photo of the event. Aside from taking one photography class in college during my semester in London (where I didn't exactly take my classes as seriously as hanging out with locals in the pub), I don't have any real photojournalism training. I love to take photos, but not under pressure to get the "right shot."

I've never had the experience of writing on a deadline (except for school) and I agree about it being a "rush!" I, too, felt uncomfortable with the photo part and trying to find the right shot. I was looking around at the other experienced people and trying to imitate them. This is what we are here for, though! To push ourselves and learn new things. I am glad that others have similar feelings to my own. Thanks for sharing!
