Freedom of speech may not be as important to the public as journalists may believe. One third of the public routinely say in surveys that people should not be able to sing songs that are offensive, Paulson said.
He showed teachers a government-prepared citizenship test question about the First Amendment that did not include the freedom of press. After this fact was reported in the newspaper, the test question was changed, he said.
