Out on the street doing the journalism thing. The interviews were a great experience. We had to get our hands around our angle and find folks willing to talk to us. Although most said yes, there were a few who would not speak to us for "corporate" reasons. What evolved over the course of the two hours was our ability to get our interviewees to elaborate on our questions. We found some very interesting and talkative people. We were able to get several different perspectives on the summer experience. It made me realize how difficult this is for our students. We are adults with a lot more confidence in our ability to approach people. High school students do not always have this comfort level with talking to people they do not know. It was a bit awkward at first for me too. I will go home with a new commitment to providing my students practice at doing this before I send them out on a real story.
