Exploring the First Amendment
In a fun and very informative talk today, Ken Paulson of the First Amendment Center emphasized that if you take only one thing from his talk, it would be what this slide presents. Before the American people would ratify the Constitution, they demanded a Bill of Rights, which was ratified two years later. People simply did not want the government to have too much power.
Using a group quiz throughout the talk was very effective and engaging. Teams had to think about and discuss each of Paulson's points. Keeping score made it competitive. Having teams stand and announcing high and higher scores until only one team was left standing was a good technique.
I feel lucky to live in Oregon which is an open forum state. Not being subject to prior review makes it feel more like there is freedom of the press because it also applies to high schools. Our publication, The Talisman, contains the words "a student newspaper" in the flag to make it clear to the world exactly what type of paper they are reading.
I have had discussions with my principal about the steps I take to be accurate and respectful of the school. After ten years I am happy to say that I have never been reprimanded by the principal for anything printed in our publication.
