MCT Campus and Reporting on Global or National News

The MCT campus subscription available from HSJ (which costs a $100 lifetime fee) is a helpful resource if used wisely.  My staff uses it primarily to access photos and infographics we can publish when we report on national stories.  This year our editors decided to emphasize creating our own photos and graphics, so we use it rarely, but it helps greatly.  When we run stories outside our school and community, we try to either localize or to focus on issues that we think students in our school ought to know about but might not have encountered in their own reading or viewing.  Examples have included explaining the "sequester" or the Affordable Health Care Act.  Since many students struggle to wade through the legalities of using Creative Commons images, this resource is very helpful for maintaining high standards around copyright when our own, homegrown visuals are not available. Here is an example:

  1. Interesting to see how the pictures from MCT campus can be used. My school has had a subscription for two years, and I haven't learned to use it until recently. I need to get on the ball, and show students how to use it next year. I think it is much easier than using Creative Commons. Maybe I can interview you for my story, Bonnie?

    1. I would be happy to answer whatever questions I can. I could possibly also put you in touch with one of my students who is an ace photo finder on MCT and Creative Commons.

  2. We use it, too, but as "as-needed" filler in our print issues since my staff is so small.
