"Pau" is how the locals in Hawaii say finished. Our news year is pau. Monday, our small newspaper staff is distributing the year's last issue, as well as hosting an informational meeting for next year's (also small) staff. We are wrapping up, yet gearing up at the same time.
I was a journalism major way back in my college days in Arkansas. I found my way to Hawaii 18 years ago as an English teacher. Three years ago, I was given the opportunity to teach the Newswriting class. I was so excited to get back into journalism and to help students write for the real world. While still excited, the realities of working with a student staff, plus a growing knowledge of all that I don't know, has set in and I am so thankful for the chance to attend this summer institute with others in the same boat and learn how to do more and how to do it better.

My first AP job was in Honolulu. When we finished a shift, we'd turn to the others in the bureau and say "I'm pau." I still say that, though people don't get it in Phoenix. That's for the fond memory.

It's a great word for a great thing. Finishing certainly feels good.
