Who's the Boss?

The ability to empathize is one of the most important characteristics of bosses, said Kristin Gilger, assistant dean at the Cronkite School.

Fortunately for me, my administrators put the considerations and needs of students first, which helps me to stay focused and balanced in what I need from them.  I have not yet found a situation I couldn't talk with any of them about.

Research, Gilger said, shows the main areas a good boss excels in are:
1) Competence
2) Communication
3) Compassion
and the one she added
4) Courage

Only one of the four areas requires any kind of improvement, communication; however, it is my belief everyone's time is full of expectations, meetings and demands.  An email usually works best -- even for me.

As the "boss" of my students, I communicate best via email, illustrating how crazy our world has become.  It seems almost surreal to think as few as twenty years ago email wasn't as prevalent. Twenty-five years ago email didn't exist for the average person; it was a big business or government tool.

I can still remember the sound of a modem as a line was dialed up for access to the Internet!  When we first started emailing design drafts between newspaper sites, the excitement was palpable.

Now sending off and receiving messages sits literally in the palms of our hands -- or even in headgear.

When I return home, I think I might make a suggestion to the administration; they might enjoy the computer eyeglasses. Then there will be no escaping our communication... (mad laugh here).
