Where Art Thou, Jeff Daniels?: The (Republic) Newsroom
I interned at the Sacramento Bee in high school and college, so being back in a professional newsroom today brought back some memories. The atmosphere of a bustling newsroom is a unique environment. One of the highlights for me today was seeing the converged newsroom and how both the Republic and KPNX share resources. It was also cool to see in the morning meeting how the print and TV sides accommodated each other and collaborated on stories.
With the harmony that is evident between KPNX and the Republic, it is surprising to me that more media markets don't have this kind of alliance, especially considering the growth of multimedia online and in mobile and tablet devices.
We have a television production program at our school as well and the video program director and I are constantly thinking of ways to converge and cross-promote each others' news outlet. Our goal is to ultimately team-teach a class that will produce one big mega-entity of journalism. We will certainly look to the Republic media group as an inspiration for our future endeavors.

I love watching Newsroom and faithfully follow @WillMcAvoyACN and @drunkwillmcavoy on Twitter.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone use clips from Newsroom in his or her classes?
My friends at CNN say it's super realistic to what they experience at work every day. The CNN Medial Unit producers will often get together and have viewing parties for it.

On the tour I found myself wondering what it is like in the newsroom when some BIG event goes down and everyone is mobilized to report on the event. It must be totally electric and an adrenaline rush like no other.
ReplyDeleteI also noticed there was a really good mix of older and younger males and females on the editorial team. Not like those old-time movies that showed all white men working in the newsroom. The tour showed us a place that looked like a fun place to work.

I would like to work with other media teachers at school, but I'm not sure they want to collaborate. I will have to think of strategies to persuade them. It should be beneficial for all of our programs and for the students.
