Hopefully after last week's session on design you realized that if you're not working in InDesign to produce your publication, you should be.
I worked as a page designer for a year at Northwest Arkansas Newspapers and between that and my time in the college newsroom, I became pretty comfortable with design. I'm glad I got to ask some of my weird little questions and I KNOW it's going to improve both my freelance design and my teaching.
Here's an awesome site with video tutorials that I found while working on a new lesson plan a few days ago. Sitting and helping other people in our room and talking with some other people around the pool has given me a lot of new ideas and I can't wait to write new lessons that will make it easier for my students to understand InDesign.
Again, I have to mention www.Lynda.com, which you can try for free for seven days, and it's an AWESOME resource for professional development. I used the Web site to learn Adobe Flash and Final Cut Pro, and it was awesome.

PS
If you don't do CMD+B and Ignore Text Wrap, learn it. That changed my life in InDesign and I just learned it a few months ago!
Thanks, Bailey. I'm dancing around InDesign, and I know I need to step up. It's so difficult to teach journalism, design, photography, writing, InDesign, yearbook lingo, and everything else that comes with producing a yearbook. Your little push is what I need. Well, perhaps more of a kick.
ReplyDeleteThese are some great resources, Bailey. I feel like I've only just gotten comfortable with CS3 in the past few months, and now we're bumping up to CS6 over the summer. I want to be able to take full advantage of the upgrade. One thing that really confused me in the labs the other day was Adobe Bridge. Still not sure what it is exactly, or if we'll even have it at my school. So it's good to have some sites to turn to for tutorials.

Thanks for the tip. I struggle with this every year. I learn things on In Design, teach a few tips to the kids, and then I have to reteach myself every year because the kids are the ones who use it during the year. I need to go through the tutorials for iMovie so we can begin broadcast this year.
