One of the best ways to put your student's work in front of thousands of new readers is to partner with local newspapers. This can be accomplished in many ways.
It's great to print your own publications and to develop fresh, new online products, as well as taking advantage of social media. You should certainly continue to do these types of things. I am suggesting that you take this a step further and submit material directly to your local and regional newspapers for publication.
Back in the 90's when I edited the Prairie Grove Enterprise, I used to publish student-submitted school news on a page with a mini-flag developed by the students. I should have accomplished something like this at Westville this year, but it's not too late to do it this coming school year.
Alan Weintraut leads by example because his school newspaper is published for free by a local newspaper. Your paper may not agree to do this, but the first thing you have to do is ask them. I have not tried this, but this year I plan to.
The second thing you will probably need to do is to offer for your kids to sell enough advertising to support this venture. It's only fair for the paper to recoup some of its expenses. It will be great experience for the kids and help them develop relationships with advertisers that can support your other products.
You might even work out partnerships for photography, reporting and production. Who knows what you will think of. Eva is probably already getting her kids videos broadcast on the local television broadcasts. We can do the same thing with local news websites too.
Once you're in the local papers, then you can write about your other products and how you are using social media, etc. The paper will probably let you publish ads promoting these too. Good luck.

This is a really cool idea! I know our adviser will have to look into the super local because we used to rely on the North County Times, which covered the top half of San Diego County (I think with a 75,000 circulation), and that paper merged into the overall County Paper. Hopefully we kind find a smaller local outfit that will bring us some collaboration

I've been really intrigued by this idea since Alan talked about his relationship with the Washington Post. We have a small daily local and we are the only news print high school paper in the county, so I think there's a pretty good chance that they would help us with costs and/or print some of the students' work. I will need to see how to look into this when I get home.

Keeping an open door with local media can be extremely beneficial for a journalism program! We have had speakers from the Black Hills State University and local television and newspaper reporters as well as tours through the Black Hills Pioneer, all helping to illustrate opportunities and complexities within the field of journalism.
ReplyDeleteAlso, our local newspaper, the Meade County Times, has been supportive of staff who want to do some freelancing, taking pictures and writing stories.

I couldn't agree more Scott.
ReplyDeleteI've been able to establish a great working relationship with our little local paper. The primary photographer for the paper works with my students when they are all on sidelines shooting sports. My students write and send articles about school news to the paper with photos and caps.
This spring I spoke with the editor of the paper to see if they would allow us to design/write one full page of the paper. He agreed to allowing us one page a month. That's still in process. We'll see if we can get it started by second semester.
My students and I will also be touring our local paper this year.
I'm excited about the upcoming school year and continuing to build the relationship with our local paper.

ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I had been considering doing that. Any ideas on intros or how to approach other publications? I would think I need to go to the adviser directly, but then again, is it a function that should be admin to admin. Thoughts anyone?
