"Think" Fresh

Dean Christopher Callahan with "fresh" cup in hand.

It was refreshing to hear from Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication's Dean Christopher Callahan today.  He walked in taking sips from his Subway cup, and was cool in every way.

Callahan mentioned to our group that the time students stand out, "Is when they walk in the door."

When he walked in, we were ready.  Our instructor, Steve Elliot, had told us Callahan's session was a no computer/smart phone zone.  He wanted to make sure we were engaged and focused on what Callahan had to say.

Wow...this seemed fresh and new.  We couldn't post to Facebook?  We couldn't tweet?

We've been learning about many social media tools of engagement, however, at this moment, we had to put them aside.

I'm sure many fingers were itching.  However, as I looked around, many fingers were holding pens and writing.  Oh?  What's that?

It's an art-form that is becoming lost.  I'm glad we had the chance to rediscover it and scribble shorthand as we tried to keep up with Callahan.

Thanks Steve for having us do something new, which isn't new at all.  We need those digital digressions.

  1. When we interviewed the dean for our institute stories, he said he does not allow electronic devices of any variety in his classes on campus. It's interesting to think about, but I think the benefits outweigh the costs (most of the time) in my class.
