Story Mapping

I really found the session on story mapping very valuable.  I have struggled teaching my students how to find the story angle.  This method is so simple yet so meaningful. I am going to try to do a similar group exercise with my students to introduce the concept. I will make this a required part of my story planning process. I also liked the advice to have students working on multiple stories at the same time.  I plan to have my students story map at least three stories during each cycle.

  1. I agree. Students on my newspaper last year had to complete two story ideas for each section, and it seemed to be a struggle. Three story ideas an issue seems much more doable. The story mapping would be a more organized way of pitching ideas. The brainstorming method always devolved into tons of talking, and not much doing.

  2. I agree. I found this exercise to be extremely helpful. I find students are frequently coming up these broad based ideas. I am also going to 'borrow' the idea to have students email their ideas rather than brainstorm. I'm excited to see what they come up with and I'm hoping that this will encourage a more diverse array of topics.
