Steve Elliott does enjoy showing his videos from this series from the 1950s. These clips show a truth that none of us can afford to forget--that life is change.
So many people tell us that the profession of journalism lies on its deathbed. Well, these clips show a world where copysetters sit in rows and put stories into the machine one letter at a time. Those men never could have imagined our modern world where reporters have tools ranging from iphones to Google glass.
So those who tell us that journalism is dead have no idea what form the professional will take in fifty years. That gives me hope. Newspapers may reformat and reporters may find their jobs radically changed; however, journalism isn't dying.
Even without the powerful reminder that the world changes, these quotes are fun. Fun in an offensive sort of way, sure, but fun. According to these little gems, reporters must be courageous, determined and male.

I love that we can laugh at these videos, Lyn. It means we're so far removed from those days that we can now appreciate how far we've come. I also share your view of "hope." It was a question I asked on day one, and each day gives me another glimmer that what I teach isn't all for naught.
