Ponyter News U as a Teaching Tool

UPDATE: If you liked today's reporting simulation, you will LOVE the Be a Reporter Game I mentioned below.

If you've never used Poynter News University for training either yourself or your students, I would highly encourage you to check it out. There are numerous free options, and you can get a log-in for yourself or class access if you wants students to work individually or in partners.

Some of their simulations I've used in class include The Be a Reporter Game, which takes them through an entire reporting simulation trying to figure out how a group of school children got food poisoning during the school day (not based on a true story :) ), The Be an Editor Game, which lets students rank stories based on characteristics of newsworthiness in individual sections of a paper and get critiqued on their judgement, and The Interview, which teaches students what makes a good question vs. what will make a subject stop talking.

The full list of courses available to educators can be found Here. If you haven't checked them out, I would highly encourage you to go through some of the simulations and courses to see what you can use in your own classroom or for professional development.

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I use Poynter but I have not used the news university part. I will try some of these suggestions.
