Opinion writing

Many moons ago I wrote for an opinion column at San Diego State for the Daily Aztec.  I did not have any real training.  I just wrote a story and turned it in an hour before the deadline.  Today, I learned everything that I should have learned then.  Sarah Garrecht Gassen's course on opinion writing shed light on many aspects of opinion writing that clarified many things that I could take into my broadcasting course.  Hearing her critiques of the different papers brought to the institute my my colleagues was a neat experience.  Not only did I get to hear about some of the issues from other teacher's publications, but I also received tips on how to create effective opinion pieces.  Also, I really cannot wait to use what I learned here to create a new section of my broadcasting instruction.  I cannot wait to experiment with video commentary and see where it goes.  My hunch is, with training based on what I learned today, the kids will eventually get what a good video editorial is and create segments for our weekly broadcast that other students can relate too, without angering the administration...too much...
