Getting Our Reynolds Publication Ready --- Images/Photoshop

I tried uploading photos to our Reynolds SNO site this morning and found that each image needs to be one megabyte or smaller.

If you're not familiar with Photoshop and image resizing, here's a tutorial on how to edit your photos.

NOTE:  At the end of the process, you really need to do a Save As so that you preserve your original copy.

NOTE:  We are going to prefer horizontal photos to vertical ones so they load to the front page carousel better.

Here we go:

1) Open Photoshop.  Open your photo within Photoshop.  Note the percentage of the view up top in the tab.  You're likely looking at it at a quarter or 16.7% of real size. These images are massive.

What percentage of the image are you seeing, out of curiosity? Remember,
your display islikely 1,440 pixels (or so) across, but your image might be 4,000+

2) Go to the "Image" menu, and find "Image Size."  Click it.

There it is!

3) Look at the top numbers--your image's dimensions.  If it's fresh out of a camera or iPhone, chances are the long dimension will be in excess of 3,000 pixels.   We're going to edit the long dimension of your image, whether horizontal or vertical.

These are big images!  We're going to scale them down.

4) Make sure the bottom three check boxes are checked.  Edit the long dimension (up top; either width or height, depending) and set it to 800 pixels.   Click OK.

Make sure the bottom three are checked, too.

5) Go to "File," click "SAVE AS."  Choose a destination and a new file name.  Be descriptive, and consider including "SM" or "Small" as a designator to note that it is a resized image.

6) When presented with the slider (zero to 12), select 10.  There's no appreciable difference in compression quality, and it saves a smidge of space.  (Note: for full-resolution printing of 8x10 images, etc., you would want to choose "12.")

Take a look at the difference between the two images, just for sake of comparison.

Good resolution, fine detail. Big file.

Pixelated because I zoomed in. Less detail. Small file. Just fine
for online viewing. Again, I zoomed in for sake of illustration.

Upload your image to SNO, and you're good to go!   Drop me a line if you have questions.

  1. Thanks Mike. I can take this back and share it with my kids for our online newspaper, too.
