Steve Doig shows the 2013 Reynolds High School Journalism Institute fellows how to use Books.Google.com/Ngrams. |
I learned more about using Google in one session than I did in my research class for my doctorate and my class in Research for library science.
I'm a self-admitted Google stalker. Honestly, I use Google to stalk any new boyfriend my youngest daughter has. (It hasn't been that many, but...) She knows and just rolls her eyes at me. So, I thought I knew a lot about searching Google.
After today's session, I have a whole new way to use Google for research. Google alerts, Google books, and Google trends were all new to me. Not only am I excited about how I can use them, I'm super excited about how I can help my students be better researchers. I don't just mean my journalism students either. My honors and regular English 11 students will benefit as well.
I can't say enough about what these two weeks at ASU Reynolds has meant to me. It's given this teacher a shot in the arm and and a wealth of new information and skills on which I can draw for all my students.

Checking out your daughter's boyfriends on Google? What a plan! I was really old school. When my daughter's boyfriends would call, I'd ask, "What did you get in math?" I figured they'd be so stunned by my question that it wouldn't occur to them to lie to me.
ReplyDeleteI'd used only a couple of the research tools which Steve Doig talked about today. A couple years ago my journalism students were using Google Maps to find people they knew. Imagine my surprise when one student announced that he had lived on my street for a while. Who knew?
I, too, learned a great deal from Doig. And I, too, plan to use his digital tools in research. For my journalism students, of course, and for my English 12 students.

Don't feel bad about Google stalking, they wouldn't create those search functions if it wasn't meant to do that ;)
ReplyDeleteMaybe eventually you will train your daughter to Google stalk her own boyfriends and weed out the bad ones. OR you can just set a Google alert for the name so you get an update every time his name pops up.
